Tall Ships Australia and New Zealand

I am a longtime member of the Tall Ships Australia and New Zealand Association having served the committee in the role of Secretary, Web Administrator and currently the Chair of the Membership and Communications Working Group.

“Murray has been involved with sail training in a range of capacities since 2000 and is currently a Sail Training International Trustee looking into education, youth development and sail training research. He is also the volunteer chair of the Membership & Communications Working Group for the Australian Sail Training Association. Murray is also a full time high school science teacher working to connect teachers, students and educational outcomes with sail training.

Murray has conducted preliminary research into the impact sail training has on student engagement with education and learning and is now investigating the impact sail training has on teacher pedagogy. He is also currently working within Sail Training International to coordinate the next round of sponsored research and literature reviews whilst collating the growing body of research into sail training.

Murray’s previous work includes the exploration of how trainees learn and the components of an effective youth development program. He has developed and expanded existing youth development programs with AUSTA as well as the corporate training and young leaders program for the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme. Murray has also developed the ‘Generic Youth Development Program’ and assisted with the development of the ‘Self-Assessment Tool Kit’ for Sail Training International.

Murray is a previous winner of the Sail Training International ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award and has been a regular presenter at the International Sail Training and Tall Ships conferences presenting on a range of topics since 2008.

He is currently developing a range of sail training support material including a facilitators’ guide, a teacher training guide along with associated curriculum links and resources”

Young Endeavour Youth Scheme

My first exposure to the Government run tall ship Young Endeavour was in 2000 as a Youth Crew member sailing from Geelong to Adelaide.

In 2004 I made my way back to Young Endeavour but this time to serve her as the Youth Development and Voyage Coordinator. During this time I acted in the roles of Assistant Business Manager, Acting Business Manager and Acting Marketing Manager.

The Young Endeavour Youth Scheme is a not for profit organisation which provides young Australians with a unique, challenging and inspirational experience at sea. Our voyages increase self awareness, develop teamwork and leadership skills and create a strong sense of community responsibility amongst members of the youth crew.

The Scheme began when the magnificent sail training ship STS Young Endeavour was given to the people of Australia by the United Kingdom as a Bicentennial gift back in 1988. Since then, the Scheme, in partnership with the Australian Government and the Royal Australian Navy, has provided challenging training voyages for over 12,000 young Australians aboard Young Endeavour.

Young Endeavour undertakes around 20 voyages each year, mostly along the east and south coasts of Australia. Each voyage we embark 24 young Australians – the youth crew – and nine specially trained Royal Australian Navy crew, usually for an eleven day adventure at sea.
